In 2014, the team’s official title was McLaren Mercedes. In 2015, the team, under a new partnership with car manufacturer Honda changed its official title to McLaren Honda. In 2018, the team was powered by Renault, becoming McLaren-Renault until 2020, when the team switched from Renault back to Mercedes. In 1966, McLaren suffered with reliability with their Ford 4.2-litre engine, and only scored one point after changing to a Serenissima V8. In 1967 they tried two different BRM engines.
THE GT DRIVEN BY McLAREN DNA
Such was their advantage last year that they ceased developing upgrades for the car as early as August, shifting their focus to this year’s model and demonstrating they were enormously confident in being able to maintain the advantage they already held over the field. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown said his team is “delighted to launch our 2024 Formula 1 livery ahead of the new season – the design looks awesome, and I can’t wait to go racing and see it come to life on track lexatrade review next month”. The Speedtail is the successor to the McLaren F1, incorporating that iconic 3-seat layout and similar mind-boggling performance. In pure terms, the Speedtail is often described as a hyper-GT. Murray wasn’t so bothered about performance numbers, though. That was just a byproduct of building a race car you can enjoy on the road and as a GT car. What he did want was at least 100 horsepower per liter from the engine, and he knew only Honda, BMW, or Ferrari could build that engine reliably. McLaren had a relationship in F1 with Honda, but Honda just didn’t seem interested.
A subsequent drop in form in the latter part of the season saw McLaren ending up fourth in the constructors’ championship behind Ferrari. The Hungarian Grand Prix saw the team score their best result of the season with Alonso and Button finishing fifth and ninth, respectively.[128][129] However, McLaren did not score points in the next four races until Button finished ninth at the Russian Grand Prix. At the following United States Grand Prix, Button scored his best result of the season with sixth place. The team finished ninth in the constructors’ standings with 27 points, McLaren’s worst performance since 1980. In 1980, the company merged with Ron Dennis’ Project 4 Racing team.
Speaking to select media, including Motorsport.com, ahead of the livery reveal, Brown also outlined his thoughts on the year ahead for McLaren, as well as why the tweaks to the colour scheme have been made. The MCL38’s launch specification design will be revealed by McLaren on 14 February, with the car’s moniker restoring the numbering system used before 2023’s MCL60 was named in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the team’s founding, but skipping the unused MCL37. The light blue touches that have featured on McLaren’s last two cars have been removed for 2024, with the team opting for a darker blue more like the one it used in the years running up to 2022 solely around a decal for sponsor DP World. IMSA season preview: GTD
Make no mistake, this is a hardcore track monster. Using the same ultra-lightweight but ultra-strong carbon fiber composite that the Formula One race cars use, it comes in at under 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs). Using a bespoke 5.2L naturally aspirated V10, it has been tweaked and tuned to the maximum, screaming to over 10,000 RPM and producing a hefty 830 HP. The entire car has also been shaped and refined from the Ultimate Vision concept so that every single surface of the car produces downforce, to the tune of 1,200 kg (2,646 lbs) worth at 130 or more mph. McLaren themselves state that the Solus GT, which is limited to track-use only, is as close as one can get to a Formula One car in terms of power, speed, braking, and aerodynamics. In Q2 2023, McLaren announced a new car series for extremely limited production, known as the Legacy Series.
McLaren P1™
This began the team’s most successful era; with Porsche and Honda engines, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna won seven Drivers’ Championships between them and the team took six Constructors’ Championships. The combination of Prost and Senna was particularly dominant—together they won all but one race in 1988—but later their rivalry soured and Prost left for Ferrari. Fellow English team Williams offered the most consistent challenge during this period, the two winning every constructors’ title between 1984 and 1994. By the mid-1990s, Honda had withdrawn from Formula One, Senna had moved to Williams, and the team went three seasons without a win. With Mercedes-Benz engines, West sponsorship, and former Williams designer Adrian Newey, further championships came in 1998 and 1999 with driver Mika Häkkinen, and during the 2000s the team were consistent front-runners, with driver Lewis Hamilton taking their latest title in 2008.
